From Today → AGI → Singularity? (The big picture)
Three very common positions in 2026:
- Very fast takeoff camp → AGI late 2020s – early 2030s → Singularity short time after (months–few years)
- Medium/slow takeoff camp → AGI 2035–2050 → gradual transition (possibly decades)
- Never / very far away camp → fundamental limits exist → or progress plateaus significantly
Most important concepts to understand
- Scaling laws — bigger + more data + more compute → usually much better
- Intelligence explosion — super-smart AI makes even smarter AI very quickly
- The alignment problem — extremely difficult to make superintelligent system want what we actually want
Two very different futures people imagine
Optimistic: cure aging, end poverty, clean energy, space colonization, radical abundance
Pessimistic / existential risk: we lose control → humanity becomes irrelevant / extinct
Most serious researchers now say: Both outcomes are possible.
