Driverless Cars Poised to Hit London Streets in 2026

Google’s autonomous driving division Waymo plans to launch fully driverless vehicles in London by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval from UK authorities. Currently, about two dozen Waymo cars are on the capital’s roads collecting mapping data, with subsequent phases expected to include safety-driver trials before public service begins. UK transport officials have welcomed Waymo’s choice of London as its first European city but stress that robust safety and security frameworks are being developed to govern the technology’s introduction. Proponents say the autonomous vehicles could improve road safety through advanced sensors and reduce risks for pedestrians and cyclists. However, key operational details remain unclear, including the initial service area within the city and how well the technology will handle London’s complex traffic patterns and pedestrian behaviours. The slow rollout is expected to start in a limited area before potential expansion.
